The Calm Before the Storm

11-12-2010

On a cold morning, the mission trip began by departing Carlisle Pennsylvania to travel to Gulfport Mississippi to help rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The combined group from York and Carlisle departed at about 8:30AM with well wishes, prayers and home made cookies. Packed up in three vans and one trailer we made our way out of PA beginning our service in God's name.

The first day travels took us through West Virginia, Virginia and into Tennessee. We stopped for a bite to eat at the quaint Pink Cadillac Cafe in Natural Bridge, VA. The piles of french fries were big and the monkeys were even bigger.

We stopped for the first night in Chattanooga Tennessee at Red Bank UMC. The folks at Red Bank were kind and generous enough to let us stay in the gymnasium in the evening and use their facilities before embarking again in the morning, after a quick breakfast.

Saturday took us out of Tennessee and through Georgia, Alabama and into Mississippi. We found out we had a few stow-a-ways in one of the vehicles, but they didn't weigh us down too much.

We successfully arrived at Camp Love on Saturday evening around 4pm!!! We may have been a little tired, but it was all worth the drive. We learned all about "Queen Anne" and all the things she likes and doesn't like. We played some other team building games in the vehicles on the way down and learned more about the other members (maybe too much for the first two days)... After all of the gear and luggage was inside, we sat down to a delicious spaghetti dinner followed by a hymn sing and fellowship. We got settled in to our new surroundings and surveyed the wonderful facilities. Spacious and well organized tool storage, covered loading areas and a warehouse of supplies were ready and waiting for us to get to work. We were all ready for bed, but not before playing a few rounds of NERTS to calm us down.

Sunday morning came (a little too early for some) and we were invited to worship at Nugent UMC which shares the grounds with Camp Love. After a light breakfast we walked up for the 10AM service and were warmly welcomed by the congregation and pastors. The service was moving, spiritually fulfilling and had a beautiful offertory solo! Thank you for making us feel at welcome and at home, even when we are so far away from our home congregations.

Following church we were off to sight see in New Orleans Louisiana. We hit the town and split up into a few smaller groups for some lunch, shopping and to see the local color the city had to offer.
